Was my crash information already sent to CCP?
The EVE client tries to send crash information including the crash dump file directly to CCP, if it is able to do so. You will be able to see if the crash dump upload was successful if you had LogLite running when the crash happened.
It is still very useful to report the crash through a bug report even if CCP received a crash dump as the additional information from the bug report can be very useful in fixing the cause for the crash.
Application Crash
If the crash does not affect the system and instead brings up a windows error report that looks like this:
- exefile has caused a problem and needs to close
then this is an application crash. This is possibly EVE itself crashing, but still could be a third party application causing EVE to crash.
In order to bring this to the attention of the developers in the quickest way possible, CCP needs a .dmp file. This .dmp file will be created in most cases directly by EVE, but the instructions for finding it are described below.
EVE-client generated minidump in Windows
In most cases you will be able to find the crash-dump in either of following locations without the need to configure anything:
- %LOCALAPPDATA%\CCP\EVE\Crashes\Reports
or
- %LOCALAPPDATA%\CCP\EVE\Reports
Look for a .dmp file which was generated at the time of the crash. This file was also sent to CCP already through the crash reporting system if it was enabled and not otherwise blocked. Please still attach it to a bug report in the case that the automatic upload was not successful.
Other methods for Windows
Please note: You should not follow these instructions if you have changed the default debugger on your system, or if you have visual studio installed. Instead, if this is the case, when eve crashes click "debug", go to the debug menu, and click "save dump file".
The most reliable way to create a .dmp file is when EVE crashes and you are presented with the dialog telling you that EVE crashed. Do not click ok. Instead, follow these instructions:
- Start Task Manager. To do this, use one of the following methods:
- Right-click an empty area of the task bar, and then click Task Manager.
- Press CTRL+SHIFT+ESC.
- Click the Processes tab.
- Right-click the name of the process that you want (EVE should be called "exefile.exe"), and then click Create Dump File.
- If you are prompted for an administrator password or confirmation, type your password or click Continue.
- Look in the following folder: C:\Users\UserName\AppData\Local\Temp for the dump file.
- When you receive a message that states that the dump file was successfully created, click OK.
- Then you may click ok on the dialog that told you Eve crashed. Then navigate to the above path and attach the dump file to your bug report or petition.
Please note: All .dmp or .mdmp files need to be zipped before attaching them to a bug report and some may be too large to attach directly.
macOS
Client generated crash dumps are normally stored in:
- ~/Library/Application Support/CCP/EVE/completed
You can open this hidden location by using the "Go to Folder..." option in the "Go" menu in Finder and pasting in the path.
