If you are unable to log in to EVE Online via Steam after changing your account information (such as your email, password, or authentication settings), this guide explains the possible causes and how to resolve them.
Common Causes
Cause |
Description |
|---|---|
Username and password added to a Steam-linked account |
Creating a standalone login for your Steam-linked account allows you to log in directly through the EVE Launcher, but it may temporarily interrupt Steam-based authentication. |
Steam session expired |
Steam sometimes requires a full relogin after significant account changes for security reasons. |
Cached credentials |
Outdated login tokens stored in the EVE Launcher can prevent successful authentication. |
Two-Factor Authentication mismatch |
If you recently enabled 2FA or changed devices, the launcher may be attempting to use outdated 2FA data. |
Step-by-Step Troubleshooting
1. Confirm You Are Logging in via Steam
Ensure you are selecting the “Log in with Steam” button in the EVE Launcher and not entering an EVE username and password.
If you’ve recently created standalone credentials, you can also try logging in directly using those instead. See: How to Run EVE Without Steam (Standalone Mode)
2. Restart Steam and the EVE Launcher
Fully close both Steam and the EVE Launcher.
Reopen Steam and ensure you are logged into the correct account.
Launch EVE Online from your Steam Library again.
3. Reset the EVE Launcher Session
If the Steam login process still fails after restarting both Steam and the launcher, your saved session data may be preventing proper authentication. You can reset the launcher without touching any client files.
Open the EVE Launcher.
Click the ⚙️ Settings (cogwheel) icon in the top-right corner.
In the left-hand menu, select Tools.
Click Log Out All Users.
Close the launcher completely.
Relaunch EVE Online from your Steam Library and log in again using “Log in with Steam.”
Tip: This process clears stored login tokens and reconnects your EVE Launcher to your active Steam session. It does not remove your game installation or characters.

4. Check Steam Login Session
In Steam:
Click Steam in the top-left corner → Change Account.
Log out and log back into your Steam account.
Launch EVE Online again from the Library.
If Steam requires you to re-verify your account via email or Steam Guard, complete that process before launching EVE.
5. Verify Account Linking
If you previously created standalone credentials for your Steam-linked EVE account, the account remains linked — but you now have two login methods.
Try both methods:
Via Steam: Use the “Log in with Steam” button.
Via Standalone: Use your newly created EVE username and password.
