Steam provides its own friends list, chat, and social features that are separate from EVE Online’s in-game contact and corporation systems. This article explains what your Steam friends can and can’t do in relation to your EVE Online character, and how to use both systems side by side.
While your Steam account serves as the access point for EVE Online if you play through Steam, Steam Friends and EVE Contacts operate independently. Steam friendships are managed entirely within Steam, while in-game contacts, corporations, and fleets are part of EVE’s internal systems.

Using Steam Chat While Playing EVE
You can chat with your Steam friends while in EVE by using the Steam Overlay.
Press Shift + Tab (default shortcut) to open the overlay.
Select Friends & Chat from the overlay menu.
Start or continue a conversation.
For more on the overlay, see Using Steam Overlay with EVE Online.
Managing Social Connections Inside EVE
In EVE, player interactions such as friendships, corporations, and fleets are handled within the game’s own systems. To add or communicate with another EVE pilot:
Right-click their name in chat or local.
Select Add Contact or Send Message.
Optionally adjust standings or assign labels.
For deeper social interaction tools, see Managing Multiple EVE Accounts with Steam and EVE’s in-game help for Corporations and Contacts.
Linking Steam Friends to EVE Players (Manually)
If you and a Steam friend both play EVE, you can:
Ask for each other’s character names in EVE.
Add them manually through EVE’s Contact interface.
Use Steam voice or chat to coordinate fleets outside the game.
There is currently no automatic link between Steam and EVE friends lists.
Troubleshooting Steam Friend Visibility
If your Steam friends can’t see that you’re in EVE Online:
Ensure your Steam status is set to Online.
Confirm EVE Online is listed as a game in your Steam library (it should appear as “Running” when active).
Verify Steam Overlay is enabled see Using Steam Overlay with EVE Online.
