EVE Online supports running through Steam’s Big Picture Mode and can be partially used with a Steam Controller or other gamepads through Steam Input. However, due to EVE’s heavy reliance on mouse input and keyboard shortcuts, controller functionality is limited and best suited for basic navigation or casual gameplay tasks.
Opening EVE Online in Big Picture Mode
Big Picture Mode provides a controller-friendly interface for launching games, adjusting settings, and using Steam Overlay features such as chat and screenshots.
Launch Steam.
In the top-right corner, click the Big Picture Mode icon (a small square with arrows).
Use your controller or keyboard to navigate to Library → EVE Online.
Select Play to launch the game.
Configuring Steam Controller Settings for EVE
While EVE Online does not have native controller support, Steam Input allows you to create or import custom control layouts that map controller inputs to keyboard and mouse actions.
In Big Picture Mode, navigate to EVE Online → Manage Game → Controller Configuration.
Choose one of the following options:
Community Layouts: Browse controller layouts created by other players.
Create New Layout: Customize your own input bindings.
Map controller buttons to common EVE actions such as:
Left Stick → Mouse movement
Right Trigger → Left click
Left Trigger → Right click
Button A → Confirm / Open menu
Button B → Close window / Cancel
Save your configuration.
Tip: Consider using a layout that focuses on camera control and simple ship movement, as EVE’s full UI and keyboard commands are not well-suited for full controller play.
Launching EVE and Accessing Steam Overlay with Controller
After configuring your controller:
Launch EVE Online from Big Picture Mode.
Press Shift + Tab (keyboard) or the Steam button on your controller to open the Steam Overlay.
From the Overlay, you can:
Access Friends & Chat
Capture and share screenshots
View Guides or Discussions
Adjust Controller Settings on the fly
Limitations and Known Issues
Some EVE UI elements are too small for accurate controller navigation.
Steam Controller mappings may not persist if Steam Input is disabled for the game.
Text input (e.g., chat, search fields) requires a keyboard or the on-screen Steam keyboard.
For best results, use a mouse and keyboard for most EVE gameplay and reserve the controller for specific setups or remote play.
